Friends of the Antigua Public Library – NY, Inc. and the Antigua Public Library present their annual Short Story & Visual Arts Competition, entitled “Stories Handed Down.”

How Aunt Em Got Her Scar, by Michaela Green (2009 Winner)
For generations, Antiguans & Barbudans have handed down stories chronicling events, folklore, family history, tall tales and more. This competition is an exercise in Oral History. Students are encouraged to speak with an elderly Antiguan or Barbuda about “old time” days, and submit a story based on their interview. The stories will focus on a variety of topics, including church and village life, family, school days, colorful characters, historical events, etc.
For the students who are more artistically inclined, they are encouraged to submit a drawing or illustration depicting a story handed down, or a portrait of the story-teller. The winners will be announced at the Antigua & Barbuda Literary Festival on Youth Day, Friday, November 5, 2010, from 3-4 p.m. at the Halcyon Cove by Rex Resort, St. John’s, Antigua. The winning stories will be read to the audience, and illustrations will be on display at the festival.
