After pursuing careers in fashion, retail and tourism, McFadden decided to devote time to writing. Her premiere novel, “Sugar,” was published in 2000 and was met with great critical acclaim.

She has followed up this initial success with six more critically acclaimed novels under her name, and four under the pseudonym Geneva Holliday. She is a two-time Hurston/Wright Legacy Award finalist, as well as the recipient of two fiction honors from the Black Caucus of the American Library Association (BCALA).
